Temperament

Lacey is a wonderful handler.  We have only had her with us for about a month, but, in that time we have been working on getting her used to our company and being handled by us.  In that time, she has never struck at us.  Once out of her enclosure she is placid as a sleeping puppy.  She glides from hand to hand just like she is cruising the treetops.
She appears to be completely settled into a nice routine, even only starting to display hinting type behaviour in and around her weekly feeding day.  We are calling Lacey a girl at this stage, but, do not know for sure.  Sometime in the coming months we will take her to be sexed.  Until then, she will remain a she.  To this point, she is feeding well and everything looks to be going very well.  I cannot overstate what a great pet she is.

Interesting Facts

Diamond Pythons are a cold climate snake.  This means that they are adapted to live in areas that other snakes would find too cold.  To cope with the cooler temperatures, as adults they are predominantly black to absorb as much heat through the radiation of the sun as possible.  They are also a very slow growing snake, taking approximately 5 years to reach maturity with a slow metabolism.  In captivity they will benefit most from shorter periods of high temperatures than most other snakes and from long periods of brumation (hibernation for reptiles) in line with what they would experience in the wild.  They are also prone to be easily overfed as they need less food than other snakes, commonly kept by hobbyists.
Armed with information like this, I hope to provide the necessary husbandry to keep Lacey healthy for upwards of 20 years.
